PLANNING OUTLINE APPLIED RESEARCH REPORT EDDT 231 PROJECT:

Analyze and assess the existing HVAC system for a School District 73 building. Compare and

contrast with modern HVAC techniques and equipment, and develop recommendations for

improving efficiency and operating costs.

METHOD:

• Interview and have a meeting with Art Mc Donald, supervisor of School District 73’s maintenance department to establish a buildings HVAC system that we can analyze.

• Interview Refrigeration Mechanics in School District 73 and private contractor Interior Plumbing and Heating.

• Interview experts in HVAC design at HPF Engineering and Stantec.

• Interview Walter Prescott, mechanical design instructor at Thompson Rivers University.• Assess the gathered data of the existing system and modern system and use the assessment as a basis for a HVAC design modification.

• Assess cost of modification and see if system is cost effective.

• Create a mechanical drawing for the modified HVAC system if necessary SPECIAL

PROBLEMS:

• Efficiency of building envelope (R-value)

• Buildings location (north facing windows, exposure to sun, and wind)

• Air quality

• School District’s annual budget for maintenance improvements

• Time allowance to modify HVAC system (2 months in summer)

• Many different simple solutions for a more efficient system (economical)

• Converting pneumatic controls to DDC controlsALSO:• Space allowed for preferred HVAC system (Mechanical Rooms)

• Local contractors may not be familiar with new technology

  1. This topic is definitely interesting! I'm sorry that I have absolutely nothing to offer you because I know very little about it, but I'm going to comment anyways:

I have many memories of sitting in class back in high school (Brocklehurst Secondary) and getting these onset sneezing fits. I have no known air pathogen related allergies, but somehow my school was able to make me sneeze like there was no tomorrow. It was especially bad around the beginning of spring (because of starting the AC again maybe?)

I can't imagine what it would have been like for people with allergies.

  2. Hey Denton, I'm not sure if it will help but A while back I heard a about a concept for green hvac design that incorporated living vegetation as air filtration. So when I read about your blog I went and found this site:

    Check it out!

  3. Hey Denton, I found another cool design on that Queens University site. This one involves enthalpy wheels:

    Check it out!

  4. Hey Denton, if you could space that paragraph out a bit more, it would definitely make it easier to read :)

Otherwise that, awesome topic and good luck with it.

  5. You have a nice photo of yourself on your site, but it would be better to see some images related to your topic.

  6. Also, at the end of the semester, Walter and I will be working on a proposal for a "green classroom" where we will be taking one of our ARET classrooms and upgrading the HVAC, insulation, adding renewable energy, etc. Let us know if you would be interested in helping out. Apparently there is money out there to do this.

  7. That sounds wonderful. I would be glad to help. It would be great experience for me working with you and Walter. It is also a great idea to have a green classroom for our program and I would be honored to be involved.
