PLANNING OUTLINE APPLIED RESEARCH REPORT EDDT 231 PROJECT:

Analyze and assess the existing HVAC system for a School District 73 building. Compare and

contrast with modern HVAC techniques and equipment, and develop recommendations for

improving efficiency and operating costs.

METHOD:

• Interview and have a meeting with Art Mc Donald, supervisor of School District 73’s maintenance department to establish a buildings HVAC system that we can analyze.

• Interview Refrigeration Mechanics in School District 73 and private contractor Interior Plumbing and Heating.

• Interview experts in HVAC design at HPF Engineering and Stantec.

• Interview Walter Prescott, mechanical design instructor at Thompson Rivers University.• Assess the gathered data of the existing system and modern system and use the assessment as a basis for a HVAC design modification.

• Assess cost of modification and see if system is cost effective.

• Create a mechanical drawing for the modified HVAC system if necessary SPECIAL

PROBLEMS:

• Efficiency of building envelope (R-value)

• Buildings location (north facing windows, exposure to sun, and wind)

• Air quality

• School District’s annual budget for maintenance improvements

• Time allowance to modify HVAC system (2 months in summer)

• Many different simple solutions for a more efficient system (economical)

• Converting pneumatic controls to DDC controlsALSO:• Space allowed for preferred HVAC system (Mechanical Rooms)

• Local contractors may not be familiar with new technology
